the onevoice
story and ministry:
Warren and Joel had a desire to sing and record from the time they were kids. As brothers, they started learning to sing parts while singing with their parents. They learned the melody first because it was the easiest, and as their voices matured they learned to sing alto from their mom and tenor and bass from their dad.
Both their parents grew up in musical families, so most of their family reunions included singing, as they still do today. Their Dad sang in barbershop quartets and choruses in the 70's and recorded hymns with his three brothers during the 80's. Meanwhile, their mom taught piano for years and possessed not only a fantastic sense of musicality but an instinctive musical ear.
Growing up in a family that loved to sing gave both Warren and Joel a certain amount of passion for singing and, specifically, a cappella music.
As a child in Massachusetts in the early 1980's, Warren could often times be found upstairs with two tape recorders and a pitch pipe. He would record himself singing melody and then play it back while singing each additional part and recording it with the second recorder. Throughout Warren's school years, he was active in many singing ensembles, from the lead parts in musicals to elite mixed vocal ensembles.
Joel's interest in singing took root after college when he began singing with a fairly elite group of singers in Louisville KY in 1994. Warren joined the group as well and they soon began singing competitively together in the chorus and various quartet combinations later that year. A year later, Joel was asked to direct a chorus in Bowling Green KY and was given a small 4-track recorder in order to provide learning tracks for the various ensembles within the group.

As they gained more experience singing with each other and in various ensembles they began to realize their shared and their complementary musical strengths. Over a course of more than 10 years the foundation for onevoice's signature sound developed.
In the fall of 2002, Warren and Joel hooked up with their younger brother Derek and cousin Myron to start recording their first CD. In July of 2003, the team completed "onevoice In Praise & Worship" with the help of David Thomley.
After their first CD project was a great success, they quickly began recording a second, "onevoice in Hope." This was one of their most memorable projects because it was intensely focused and emotionally demanding. Many requests had been made for the group to record songs about the hope of the Christian since life is often filled with so much disappointment, pain, anxiety, and death. The "onevoice in Hope" CD helps describe the transition that each

Christian makes from life on earth, through death, and ultimately being at home with God. They completed this project in May of 2004 and dedicated it to their mother, Nancy Guyer, who had died ten years earlier from cancer at the age of 52.
While recording the "onevoice in Hope" CD, they found Kylene Crabb at Joel's congregation and asked her to sing a few tracks. The group still receives requests to feature Kylene again. Ralph Walker became a strong advocate for the first recording and was a natural fit for the second project. And Warren's daughter, Layne (7 yrs), contributed with a solo on the end of the "Do Lord" medley.

The "
onevoice Kids" CD was started in November 2004 after receiving numerous requests for onevoice to have a project dedicated to and sung by kids. While some of the songs are kids' songs, most are just favorite songs that kids love to sing. So, along with 11 kids, ages 4-16,
onevoice recorded their third CD and completed it in March 2005.
"onevoice Praise & Worship 2" was recorded in the fall and winter of 2005. Brittany Atnip first sang with the guys on the "onevoice Kids" CD, but when they sang Holy Ground with her around Joel's kitchen table, they knew that she had a special gift and put her talent to good use.
The idea for the "onevoice Stained Glass" project began when Tack Chumbley approached Warren and Joel in 2003, but it took a while for them to find the right combination of voices for the music genre. Debbie Connelly and Karen Breidert's musical ability and experience made for an amazing addition to this onevoice project. All 10 songs were recorded in just 2 days during Christmas Break 2005.
